Two main kinds of medication have been approved to help with quitting smoking. Your doctor may prescribe varenicline (Chantix) or bupropion (Zyban) to help you cope with cravings for tobacco. These medicines are pills and do not contain nicotine. In addition to these products, prescription Nicotine Replacement Therapies are also available for inhalers and nasal sprays.
Varenicline:
Brand Name: Chantix
This medicine acts on areas of the brain affected by nicotine. It helps with cravings, withdrawal symptoms and blocks the effects of nicotine & tobacco.
Typical Use:
- Start taking pills as directed about a week before Quit Date
- Medication therapy usually lasts 12 to 24 weeks
Requires prescription. Make sure to go to your doctor two weeks before your Quit Date so you can start therapy in time.
Buproprion:
Brand Names: Zyban, Wellbutrin
This medicine can help balance chemicals in your brain and reduce withdrawal symptoms. It can also be used to treat depression.
Typical Use:
- Start taking pills as directed one to two weeks before Quit Date
- Medication therapy usually lasts 7 to 12 weeks
Requires prescription. Make sure to go to your doctor at least two weeks before your Quit Date so you can start therapy in time.
Prescription NRT:
Medications similar to over-the-counter Nicotine Replacement Therapies are available as a nasal spray or inhaler with a prescription from your doctor.
Typical Use:
- Starting on Quit Date, use nasal spray or inhaler as needed
- Use as directed, and do not exceed recommended dosage
